What to Do When You’ve Been Charged with a Crime?

Have you been charged with a crime? No matter the type or severity of the crime, this can be a frightening time. Of course, the more serious the charge, the greater the fear, in most cases.

Is There Always an Arrest?

In the case of some relatively small crimes, such as a minor misdemeanor, you might be charged and prosecuted without an arrest. This might include something like a traffic ticket, for example. You receive the ticket from the police officer, and then you have instructions on how to pay it or you can opt to fight it if you want a date in court.

When the crime is serious, however, an arrest will typically occur. You may then be able to be bailed out of jail, or you might have to stay there until the date of your trial. It will depend on a range of factors.

Be Careful About What You Say

Whenever you are pulled over, detained, or arrested by law enforcement, you want to be careful about how you respond. If you aren’t careful, you could divulge things that may make it appear you are guilty and, as they say, it can be used against you in a court of law.

Therefore, you want to be careful of anything you say until you have the chance to get in touch with an attorney. If you were to say the wrong thing, you may find that it ends up coming back to haunt you later. The best thing to do is to keep quiet.
